For so many people, buying their first home signifies a transition into adulthood that walks hand-in-hand with marriage. We all have that image of a white picket fence and the groom carrying the bride over the threshold; it’s practically a staple of the American Dream. Although I share that sentiment, I have to tell you that I never imagined that dream one day coming true by uttering the words, “I live in a yurt.”
A what? A yurt. Rhymes with squirt. The shape and structure of a yurt is actually based off the dwellings of nomadic Mongolians. Okay, so the name sounds funky and they’re somewhat reminiscent of a hobbit dwelling, but who cares? These babies are affordable, easy to build and can withstand blizzards and hurricanes alike.

We don’t live in one just yet. We’re still saving, looking for the right plot of land, arguing over which ways to cut costs. But I thought I’d share our little dream with you guys, humble as it is! What are your plans for the hearth you’ll share with your significant other?
