herbalmixes

Corey and I recently got up at the crack of dawn to visit a friend and learn how to make hand lotion, a facial scrub, toner and a face mask! We also learned about infusing oils with different herbs for medicinal and culinary use. We’re lucky to know someone who is so giving and eager to share what has taken them years to perfect!

It’s a gentle reminder that true community is found where people give without expecting anything in return, and to give someone skills they can use and share with others is one of the most mutually rewarding gifts. And let’s face it, sometimes the Internet is as much a curse as it is a blessing; so much time I could be spending working on a craft, learning a new language or hiking outdoors is often put aside because I’m puttering around online. I’m really going to try to pursue other hobbies and try to figure out what gifts I can share with others!

Early Monday morning thoughts…

The self is not something ready-made, but something in continuous formation through choice of action. — John Dewey

Life can be so overwhelming that it’s sometimes too easy to become a mere bystander. In some ways, being behind the camera blurs the lines even more because to take good photographs, you have to train yourself to be an observer of the world, which can be a role too passive for “normal” life. I get into this funk about every time this year, when summer is in full swing and and I feel like everything is too intense to take just one thing at a time.

As a culture, we are obsessed with aesthetics and I’m sure most of us spend a lot of time thinking about how to unclutter our homes, our office spaces and our desktops. But maybe what we really need to do is unclutter our inner landscape. Breathe, put things in perspective, decide what’s important and what can be put aside for now.

Lately, my focus has been on:

  • Working in the garden
  • Rebalancing household duties
  • Going to bed & waking up earlier
  • Volunteering for the local animal shelter
  • Saving as much money as we can
  • Organizing all my personal photos
  • Reading books from my 100 classics list this year

This week has been especially busy, but I’m enjoying it. I am really making an effort to open myself up for new and interesting experiences. I’ve always been a procrastinator, so at the advice of the quote at the top of this post, my technique lately has been to put something on my calendar and just do it without trying to over-think it too much. If I let myself worry that I won’t have time for X or Y might not work out like I’d hoped, nothing will ever get done!

Do you have any inspirational quotes on this subject? How do you keep your life from just going into auto pilot?

flower

Yesterday morning I went out to Howard’s Knob with the intent of taking some cool pictures of Boone as the sun rose over the horizon, but it was so foggy that you could barely see anything at all! I did spot a doe on the way up, but she disappeared into the brush before I could take a picture. Animals are so uncooperative. :P So here’s a picture of a wildflower instead!

I’m on a quest right now for a bag. Well, a purse, really. Not a backpack. Not a camera bag. Definitely not a fanny pack. A real, grown-up purse that will allow me to join the ranks of millions of women out there who carry their entire existence on their hip. Problem is, I’m scared to death of choosing the wrong one. When you think about it, a woman’s purse says so much about who she is as a person. It’s probably not a sign of mental health that I feel a little like I’m trying to pick out the Holy Grail on Etsy.com.

It occurs to me that this is similar to the feeling so many of our brides have when it comes time to choose their wedding gown. They’re searching for “the one” that doesn’t just make them look beautiful, but makes them feel beautiful on the inside and out. Luckily for me, choosing a purse is much easier because I can wear as many as I want without having to get a divorce first.

I think I’ve narrowed down my choices: one, two, three, or four.

P.S. Oh my God. It’s a book, it’s a purse, it’s a JANE AUSTEN PURSE.

I completely forgot about Get to Know Me Monday yesterday, so I’m doing a belated post today. :) I thought you might want a little update on how my diet’s been doing — I’ve lost 25 pounds so far! Incredible, right? Here is the diet and exercise regimen I’ve been using:

The Atkins Diet. Let me get two myths out of the way first: no, Dr. Atkins didn’t die of a heart attack, and no, it doesn’t mean you can eat high calorie foods as long as they aren’t carbs. There are actually four stages to the diet and although it takes a lot of discipline (I love bread), the results are well worth it. Several studies suggest that it has a positive effect on your cholesterol and reduces your chances of getting diabetes, as an added benefit!

The elliptical machine. This piece of equipment is probably the most efficient when it comes to time exercising vs. calories burned. A 65 minute workout burns about 700 – 800 calories for me. Plus, it’s low impact! I have hip and back pain, so it’s great that I can find a way to still exercise without worsening those problems. Practically all gyms have at least one of these machines, and the link I provided has reviews of the different brands you can buy for home use.

What methods have you been using to get healthy? Any tips for the brides out there who are trying to get fit in a time crunch?

blink1

I just finished reading Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking by Malcolm Gladwell, and I cannot recommend it enough. I was skeptical when I checked it out from the library because I’ve always been convinced that objective, carefully analyzed decision-making is always superior to snap judgments, but the author supplies enough scientific evidence to give real merit to the idea that “thin-slicing” does exist and can lead to better decision making. Fascinating stuff!

Gladwell also mentions the research of John Gottman at length, which is fantastic because I’ve always wished more people knew about him. You might want to check out John Gottman’s The Seven Princples of Making Marriage Work if you’ve been looking for no-fluff relationship advice!

Blast from the Past

Monday, March 9th, 2009

I was thinking the other day about how important wedding photographs will be to a person’s children and grandchildren. Neither of us have photos from our parents’ weddings, and I think that’s a little sad. I remember looking at my father’s senior photo as a child, though, so for our GTMM this week I thought it’d be fun to post old photos of our dads when they were our age!

Ben Butler 1978

Ah, the old days of yore — I can almost hear The Bee Gees, Supertramp and Pink Floyd playing in the background. Oh wait, sorry, that’s my iPod! ;)

Speaking of, my dad was really into music in high school. He was one of the best trumpet players and was in the marching band; he even thought about becoming a music teacher. After high school, someone barreled right into him while he was riding his motorcycle. He still has the scars but his love of motorcycles hasn’t waned. He went on to spend several years in the Air Force, and he has tons of interesting stories from traveling around the world. He met my mom and he left the service so he could settle down and have me. These days, he loves house hunting, cooking on his top-of-the-line BBQ grill and watching Nascar. When he visits, we often go on hikes to various waterfalls around Boone.

daddy_800x1000

About his dad, Corey writes: My father grew up in southern New Orleans. While he was a teenager, he played guitar in a band named John Fred and the Playboys, which had a number one hit in the 60’s titled, “Judy in Disguise”. After leaving the band, he went to college for architecture but later decided to attend dental school. After getting his DDS, he enlisted in the Navy and was sent to the Cherry Point Marine Corp base in Eastern NC. On the way, he passed through Boone and thought to himself, “I’m going to live here someday!” After leaving the Navy, he established a dental practice in Baton Rouge, Louisiana where he met my mother. They married and moved to Boone soon after.

My dad still plays music and writes songs, though just as a hobby now. He enjoys nature and the outdoors, particularly the area around my parents’ house. He’s into home repair and does lots of things himself, from carpentry to plumbing. My father and I have spent years building a stone walkway by hand alongside the stream in our backyard, I’ll always remember the time we spent out there talking as we worked.

Looking at old family photos makes me realize how important a legacy pictures really are for future generations. I know we’re both guilty of not getting in front of the lens as often as we should, and as soon as spring arrives we’re going to change that!

Don’t you want to play?

Corey and I recently saw Coraline in 3D, and it’s out-of-this-world fantastic!  It’s the first time I’ve seen a 3D film since Disney World’s Captain EO featuring Michael Jackson. Things have changed a lot since then, for sure.

Neil Gaimon is the author of Coraline, and although I haven’t read the book, we’re big fans of his other works, like Sandman and Stardust. If you love fantasy and stop animation films like Nightmare Before Christmas, you’ll love Coraline. Here are two Etsy finds related to the film!

This sleep mask is inspired from the story. Creepy! I love it.

Check out this button key! I have a thing for keys in general, so this is near and dear to my heart.

I definitely recommend spending the extra few bucks to see it in 3D. It’s really fun!

Work it.

I’ve always had a hard time sticking with a diet and exercise routine, but now that Corey and I are getting fit together, I’ve actually come to enjoy it. In our busy lives, it’s comforting to know that there are times scheduled for us to spend together hiking, going to the gym, etc. When our “quality time” revolves around watching movies and the like, is it really quality time if we’re just sitting there not talking, eyes faced forward? Exercise is much more interactive (that is, when you’re not breathing so hard it’s impossible to carry on a conversation).

Right now we’re doing a high protein, low carb diet. We’re also doing cardio and weightlifting four times a week. This week I’ve lost five pounds, woohoo! By the way, if you’re trying to be healthy and you’re looking for some good websites to help you set goals and keep track of your progress, I’ve heard tons of great reviews for SparkPeople and FitDay (the best part: they’re free!).

If you like having the structure and motivation that a personal trainer offers, you might want to try NextFitness. You can fill out a fitness profile that includes the exercises you like and the goals you have, and you’ll be matched with personal fitness trainers whose programs can be downloaded onto your iPod. You can also integrate music from your own playlists into the workout, which is pretty cool! They have thousands of different programs, so it’s easy to mix it up and find the ones you like best. It’s around $5 a week, but lots of people of people swear by them and there’s a free ten day trial if you want to see it in action.

Are any of you trying to lose weight before your wedding? What dietary rules or exercise routines work for you that you’d like to share?
